            on a screen.

          a. Mouse     b. RAM     c. Monitor     d. CPU

ii. This part sends signals to other parts of the computer to tell them what

       to do.

           a. Keyboard      b. Mouse      c. Hard disk      d. CPU

iii. This memory is for short term storage and is lost when the computer

       is turned off.

           a. ROM     b. RAM     c. Hard disk     d. CPU

iv. This part allows the user to hear information from the computer.

           a. Monitor      b. Software     c. Input     d. Speaker

 v. Another name for all the parts of a computer.

           a. Monitor     b. Software     c. Process     d. Hardware

vi.    The software that controls internal computer operations is

         called………………

    a. System software   b. Application software c. Hardware   d. None of these

2.      What is application software? Why is it required?

Ans2. Application software is the set of programs necessary to carry out operations for a specified application. Application software is required because system software cannot carry out the routine jobs performed by the user which application software can easily do.

To perform various kinds of activities, the application software comes in various categories:

i)      Packages

ii)     Specialized

iii)    Customized software

3.      Name any two popular operating systems?

Ans3. Windows, Linux

4.      Differentiate between hardware and software.

Ans4. Hardware represents the physical and tangible components of the computer i.e., the components that can be seen and touched. Input devices, output devices, floppy disk, hard disk, CD, DVD etc. are examples of computer hardware.

Software represents the set of programs that govern the operation of a computer system and make the hardware run.

5.      List some of the task performed by operating system.

Ans5. An operating system performs mainly following tasks:

(i)                Provides user interface

(ii)             Controls hardware

(iii)           Assigns Memory

(iv)           Handles applications

(v)              Handles/Manages devices

6.      Explain Time Sharing Operating System?

Ans6. This OS uses the time sharing technique. Each active user program is given a fair share of CPU time, if the time elapses or and I/O operation is requested, CPU shifts over to the next job waiting and the previous program is put to wait or handed over to  I/O manager. The active programs are scheduled for execution using certain job scheduling techniques.Eg. BSD Unix, NOS/VE, Genie etc.

7.      Give two examples of GUI based operating system.

Ans7. Windows, Android

8.      Define margins. What are the four types of margins?

Ans8. The distance from the text to the paper’s edge is called

                  Margin.

The margins are of different types:

1.      Left Margin- This is the distance between the text and the left edge of the paper.

2.      Right Margin- This is the distance between the text and the right edge of the paper.

3.      Top Margin- This is the distance between the text and the top edge of the paper.

4.      Bottom Margin- This is the distance between the text and the bottom edge of the paper.

9.      What is the difference between copying and moving a block of text?

Ans9. Moving block means removing (cutting) a block of text from one location and

           inserting it at another location.

Copying text means making a copy, inserting a copy of block at another

           location, leaving the original unchanged.

10. List any five storage devices? Explain any two.

Ans10. 1. Floppy Disks, Hard Disks, Compact Disks (CDs), DVDs, Pen Drives

        1.  Hard Disk - The hard disk drive is the main, and usually largest, data

storage device in a computer. It can store anywhere from 160

gigabytes to 2 terabytes. Hard disk speed is the speed at which

content can be read and written on hard disk. A hard disk unit

comes with a set rotation speed varying from 4500 to 7200 rpm.

Disk access time is measured in milliseconds.

        2. Compact Disks (CDs)- The compact disks or CDs are optical

media. The CDs are relatively cheap and have a storage capacity of

upto 700MB. CDs come in variety of forms eg, CDROM (read only

              memory), CD-R(Recordable), CD-RW(Rewritable).
