 Computer Applications
Class IX
Computer System (chap-1)
Assignment 2- (solution)
Q1. Fill in the blanks:-
a ICT and SmartTV are the example of convergence of technology.
b. PDA stands for Personal digital assistant.
c. ALU stands for Arithmetic Logic Unit.
d. Registers offer very fast memory but limited in size.
e. ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology .
Q2. Write any five strengths of computers?
1. Speed 4. Versatility
2. Accuracy 5. High Storage Capacity
3. Reliability
Q3. What are the three basic sections of CPU?
Ans3. Three basic sections of CPU are-
i. ALU ii. Control Unit iii. Registers
Q4. What are registers?
Ans4. Registers are basic section of CPU. All data is temporarily stored
in registers during execution of programs. Registers offer very
fast memory but very limited in size.
Q5. What do you mean by convergence of technologies?
Ans5. The process by which existing technologies merge into new
forms that bring together different types of media and
applications. e.g., the convergence of information and
communication technologies has led to a new technology term-
ICT.
Q6. Explain the following terms-
a. CPU- The CPU is also called the microprocessor or simply the
processor. CPU controls and directs the internal activities and actions of a computer. A CPU does the entire thinking and controlling in a processing action. All other parts of a computer work as directed by the CPU.
b. ALU- This unit performs the arithmetic operations i.e. addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division. All logic operations
which involves comparisons such as less than, greater than, or
equal to.
Q7. Write a short note on the following:-
a. Supercomputers- are the most powerful computers among digital computers. These consist of several processors running together thereby making them immensely faster and powerful. These computers are capable of handling huge amounts of calculations that are beyond human capabilities. Supercomputers can perform billions of instructions per second. These are mainly used in applications like weather forecasting, nuclear science research, aerodynamic modeling, seismology, metrology etc. Ex- Cray x-mp-14, Param, Pace.
b. Minicomputers- Minicomputers, also called mid range servers, are most powerful computers than micro-computers in terms of processing power and capabilities. Minicomputers are mainly multiuser systems where many users simultaneously work on the systems. Mini computers possess greater storage capacity and larger memories as compared to microcomputers. Ex- PDP-11, VAX, 7500 MAGNUM etc.
Q8. Identify the category, the following computers belong to:
(i) Microwave oven at your home.
Ans- Embedded Computer
(ii) Big interconnected computers housed at scientific lab to carry
out scientific research.
Ans- Mainframe computer
(iii) The computer in your school lab.
Ans- Desktop computer/ Personal computer
