Assignment 2 (Chap2):-

Q1 Multiple Choice Questions:-

i) Which type of memory can read data but can’t write data?

   A. Random only memory  B. Random-access memory

   C. Read-only memory       D. None of the above

ii) Which one is volatile?

    A. DROM    B. Secondary memory      C. RAM       D. Random Only memory

iii) RAM of a computer is

    A. External Memory   B. Internal Memory    C. Auxiliary  D. None of the Above

iv) This memory is for short term storage and is lost when the computer is turned off.

    A. ROM    B. CPU     C. Hard disk     D. RAM

v) Internal memory is also called

    A. Main Memory    B. External Memory  C. Auxiliary Memory D. Secondary Memory

Q2. What are the limitations of internal memory ?

 Ans2. 1. Limited storage capacity.

          2. Volatile in nature i.e., its contents get removed when power is turned off.

Q3. Describe at least two ways in which storage complements memory.

Ans3. (i) Memory has limited capacity whereas storage capacity is many more times

             compared to memory.

(ii) Memory is volatile and storage is permanent. That is, data in memory is lost

When the power goes off but in storage, the data remains there even after

                 the power goes off.

Q4. Differentiate between RAM and ROM?

Ans4.

               RAM

ROM

Random Access memory

Read only memory

RAM allows the computer to read data quickly to run applications.

ROM stores the program required to initially boot or reboot the computer.

It allows reading and writing.

It only allows reading.

RAM is volatile i.e. its contents are lost when the device is powered off.

It is non-volatile i.e. its contents are retained even when the device is powered off.

Q5. List any five storage devices. Explain any two.

Ans5. 1. Floppy Disks, Hard Disks, Compact Disks (CDs), DVDs, Pen Drives

Hard Disk - The hard disk drive is the main, and usually largest, data storage

device in a computer. It can store anywhere from 160 gigabytes to 2 terabytes.

Hard disk speed is the speed at which content can be read and written on a

hard disk. A hard disk unit comes with a set rotation speed varying from 4500

to 7200 rpm. Disk access time is measured in milliseconds.

               2. Compact Disks (CDs)- The compact disks or CDs are optical

media. The CDs are relatively cheap and have a storage capacity of

upto 700MB. CDs come in variety of forms eg, CDROM (read only

              memory), CD-R(Recordable), CD-RW(Rewritable).
